I am in love with this wonderful little horse, made by JR Smith who traded in London from 1886 until 1916, Making this horse well over 100 years old.
Different to my usual restorations, I decided not to repaint her. She came stripped and varnished, with that amazing worn bow. I can't imagine how many little feet have trod those boards over the years! I think any paint I would have added, would have taken away from the story that this beauty tells.
I have re-carved parts of her face and ears that had been lost or replaced in an unsympathetic manner, allowing my work to be visible, but blend in and add to her unique history.
She did have a dark chestnut tail when she came, and I think the colour suited, so refreshed it and added a matching mane.
The wood has been resealed but retains many of the old repairs she has obtained over the years. Including two steel plates on that wonderful old bow, which I didn't want to touch, it's just perfect in its story. the extra weight from them does make her list forward a little, so, I have made up two small wedges that prop her up a little and give her a tough more pride. However, they are entirely optional.
Brontë is not massive, measuring 37" (94cm) to her highest point with a 20" body length. 27.5" to the seat. Her bows measure 57" (145 cm) long by 14" (36 cm) wide
She is fairly solid, but I would NOT recommend him for a child, she'd be much happier on display, for all to admire!
You are welcome to collect from my home in Gloucester, or I am happy to arrange a courier. UK mainland would be around £80 but please get in touch for a quote if you are outside of this area (worldwide possible on request)
